Mountain Bike Hire
Rik has been cycling for 35 years, and mountain biking for 17 of them. He has designed and built many of the trails on this estate, including the technical red and black routes. He has also worked on some of the best-loved bike trails around Scotland. Staff at the Bike Shed are happy to offer advice to new and experienced riders. We can help you find the best bikes and routes for you and give you maps to make sure you really enjoy your experience here at Drumlanrig.
Guided rides are great if you’re visiting the area for the first time, or if you want a hassle-free, uninterrupted ride. Use our insider knowledge to get the most out of the trails. You can book Rik by the hour, half or full day and he’ll show you the best biking in Scotland. There is no-one better to guide you round our trails! In addition to his 35 years’ riding, and his designing work, Rik has been a qualified Mountain Bike Leader since the scheme began (his certificate is number 001!)
Transport from A to B: Accommodation to Bike Trails
To complete our guided ride package, we can pick you up (with your bikes) from your accommodation in our 8-seater, off-road truck and take you to the bike trails. You can also hire bikes for all the family if you haven’t brought your own.
Tuition and Skills Sessions
If you would love to try mountain biking but don’t know where to start, or if you would like to build on your existing skills, then a coaching session with Rik is a great opportunity to get the most from our trails. As an SMBLA guide and British Cycling Coach, Rik is fully trained to coach groups or individuals at all levels and ages, from complete beginners up. Rik will tailor the sessions to suit your individual or group needs. Bikes for adults and kids are available for these sessions. You can book by the hour, half or full day.

Shop and Workshop.
There is a well-equipped workshop at Rik’s Bike Shed, staffed by Cytec approved bike mechanics who can get you back on (or off!) the road. In addition to repairs, if your bike is in need of a little TLC, then Rik’s Bike Shed offers bronze, silver or gold service packages to get your trusty steed like new again. We can also arrange re-sprays. Whatever your cycling concern, we’re here to help and advise.
Rik’s Bike Shed has a selection of parts and accessories, along with cycling equipment and clothing for men, women and children. We stock a range of funky, casual t-shirts and books – great souvenirs to take home from Drumlanrig. You can also fuel up on the energy bars and drinks in stock.
If you’re looking for a new bike, we are happy to help and advise. We usually have second-hand bikes from the hire fleet or we can order a new bike to suit your needs.
Don’t just take our word for it. Here’s a lovely email we received from a recent customer:
“I’d just like to feedback what a fantastic time we had visiting the Castle last week, including the brilliant help and advice in hiring bikes from Rik. The mountain bike trails were fantastic – particularly the ‘mini-me’ which my three boys loved (ages 10, 9 and 7). Very impressed. Congratulations on a wonderful family day out.”
