Getting Here
Open Google MapsDrumlanrig Castle and the Queensberry Estate is situated just off the A76 (Dumfries to Kilmarnock), 17 miles north of Dumfries, and is signposted from the M74 (J14 southbound) and A702 at Abington and Elvanfoot. Just an hour away from Glasgow.
We’ve been told that for some people their sat nav directions take them to a no-entry sign. If this happens to you, please follow the green signs that bring you back around to the Castle. Postcode DG3 4AQ.
The 246 bus service (Dumfries-Ayr) from Dumfries in the South and Ayr in the North via Cumnock, will drop you at the Estate entrance on the A76 (no service brings you to the Castle itself). The walk from here to the Castle is 1.5 miles through the beautiful Estate grounds.
The X74 bus service will bring you from Glasgow to Cumnock. Then change to the 246 bus service (Ayr – Dumfries) to the Estate entrance for a 1.5 mile walk through the stunning Estate. Alternatively, you could take a local taxi.
The 101 bus service will bring you from Edinburgh to Thornhill, then change to the 246 bus service north to the Estate entrance, or take a taxi.
The train stops at Sanquhar. You would then take the 246 bus service south (Ayr-Dumfries) to the Estate entrance, or take a taxi. Coming from Carlisle, you could take the 246 bus service north (Dumfries-Ayr) from Dumfries Whitesands, or take a taxi.
There are taxi operators in Thornhill (Kings Taxi’s’ – 07551 217733 and 01848 331483) and ‘The Black Cab Company’ (disabled friendly) – 07375 560598) and Sanquhar (B J Taxis Tel. 01659 58198 and Murphy’s Taxis Tel. 07961977691) who will gladly transport you to the Castle (depending on availability – best to check price and book before you set out).
Easy access is afforded from Prestwick International Airport (A76) and from the International Airports at Glasgow and Edinburgh by hired car.

Accessibility
We hope to make planning your visit as simple as possible. As a result, we have prepared an Access Statement to help visitors of all ages and abilities know what to expect.
There is a lift inside the Castle and the Tearoom and Gift Shop both have easy access. Many of the paths and parts of the gardens have hard surfaces that are suitable for wheelchairs, however as you’d expect in an estate the size of Drumlanrig, the woodland paths are gravel, and grass and can become difficult to navigate. Please speak to a member of staff who will be happy to point you in the right direction, call the Castle Office on 01848 331 555, or contact us before you visit.
Bring a Group
We welcome groups all year round to the Castle, Gardens and wider Estate. Whether you are a school, college or private group we would love to hear from you.
